Creating artwork by commission is an ever-evolving process
that tends to vary with each individual project. Nonetheless, here is a general description
of how I work and what clients can expect: Usually, I prefer to
work from photos that I have taken specifically for the purpose of completing
a painting. So, a series of informal photos is taken and some reference
sketches are made during an initial meeting and sitting of about two hours.
This helps me to get a full understanding of the subject, capturing likeness,
effects of light, movement, color, etc. Pre-existing photos (such as school
or baby portraits) do not always give enough information to the artist,
resulting in "flat" or lifeless work, so I hesitate to use them.
However, there's always an exception to the rule, and I am willing to
consider any of your suggestions. Also at this meeting we
will discuss the size, media and general layout of the portrait, consider
start and completion dates, and discuss an estimated price. I will then
return to my studio. With my initial sketches and developed photos, I will finalize
a layout for the finished piece. We will then need to meet briefly to agree
on this design and a final price. I will require a payment of one-third the
total amount before work begins. Once the design is
approved, I will make a full scale drawing or "underpainting",
which will show dimensions, design and a rough likeness as it will be on the
actual canvas or selected drawing surface. In the case of a pastel, this
drawing may be made in pencil, full-scale on tracing paper, or will be loosely
outlined in pastel on the final paper (determined by style and client
requirements).I will then invite you, the client, to see the layout and any
changes that you may desire will be discussed and agreed upon at this time.
I, the artist, retain "artistic license" which allows me to paint
the portrait as I see the subject. Remember that this is not a photograph,
but a handmade original portrait. You will be invited to
see the work in progress at least once but no more than three times. At this
time, a second payment of one-third the total amount is due. Upon completion
of the portrait and acceptance by the client, the final payment is due. Any work done in fragile
media, such as charcoal or pastel will be protected with a cover sheet of
vellum and will be taped or mounted on acid-free board. I do not offer
framing services, but can recommend some options to you. Your completed portrait will be delivered finished as we agree upon in a written contract. Any materials given to the artist by the client will be returned with delivery of the finished piece. |
